From Lithium Ore to Battery: The Process Overview
Extraction / Mining
Lithium ore—such as spodumene, petalite, or brine—is extracted from the earth and processed to obtain valuable minerals. In hard rock mines, like those in Zimbabwe, the ore is first crushed before undergoing further refinement.
Concentration / Beneficiation
The crushed ore is carefully refined to maximize lithium yield, using advanced processes like flotation and magnetic separation to ensure exceptional purity and quality.
Conversion / Chemical Processing
The concentrated ore is processed to produce lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide, using techniques like roasting, leaching, purification, and drying for high-quality output.
Cathode / Anode Material Production
Lithium compounds are converted into cathode materials like lithium cobalt oxide and LFP, while anodes and electrolytes are made using graphite blends and LiPF₆ salts.
Cell Assembly
Battery cells are carefully assembled by layering cathodes, anodes, and separators through coating, pressing, and stacking. The electrolyte is then added, and each cell is sealed for optimal performance and safety.
Formation / Aging / Testing
Cells are activated through controlled charging and discharging. They then undergo rigorous safety testing, including capacity, thermal, and short-circuit checks.
Module & Pack Assembly
Individual cells are combined into modules and assembled into battery packs with thermal, management, and safety systems. These packs are then integrated into applications such as EVs, energy storage, and electronics.
